What is Moringa?

Moringa oleifera (family Moringaceae) is a fast-growing softwood tree, native to the sub-Himalayan areas of northern India.

The unripe leaves, fruits, flowers and pods of moringa are used as a highly nutritious vegetable in many countries, particularly in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hawaii and many parts of Africa. Accordingly, Moringa is an important foodstuff that has gained much attention as ‘natural nutrition of the tropics’.

It is known as the ‘tree of life’ because it manages to concentrate a large amount of different nutrients, especially in its leaves. This nutritional content keeps it intact, even when cooked, dried and stored.

Which nutrients does Moringa contain?

Moringa contains 10 times more vitamin A than carrots, 12 times more vitamin C than oranges, 17 times more calcium than milk, 15 times more potassium than bananas, 25 times more fibre than cereals, 9 times more iron than spinach, and 10 times more protein than yoghurt.
