The prevalence and incidence of vitamin B12 deficiency are associated with the most common cause, pernicious anaemia, which occurs in 50 to 4,000 cases per 100,000 individuals. In general terms, people of all ages may be affected, but 10-15% of older adults suffer from insufficient levels of vitamin B12.

Among the major causes of vitamin B12 deficiency are pernicious anaemia (which is also caused by this deficiency), mainly in infants, children and vegetarians, those who use of antacids, or due to malabsorption, among others.
